When the Olympic torch relay reaches its final destination at the Athens Olympic Stadium, over 20,000 pairs of hands will have carried a small piece of New Zealand native hardwood.

Southland-based timber company Lindsay & Dixon has supplied maple beech for the production of all 12,000 official Olympic torches, harvested from the company’s Southland forests and processed at its Tuatapere plant.

“It was a great contract to win and an honour to be involved in the creation of such a prestigious global symbol,” said Bernie Lagan, Lindsay & Dixon managing director. The torches will have traversed 34 cities and 27 countries by the time the final one reaches the Olympic Stadium on August 13.
