The UK timber and construction materials industry has lost an enthusiastic supporter following the death of David Gregson at the age of 53.
Mr Gregson joined Howarth Timber 16 years ago as sales manager from a similar position with Ronseal. Latterly he became sales and marketing manager with responsibility for the company’s 25 branches as well as the Timber Engineering Division.
Whether devising and organising a national promotional campaign covering all branches or simply talking in the yard to a customer about trends in the industry, Mr Gregson always gave his total commitment and lively interest to every topic.
Because of his interests and abilities his role was wide ranging and covered the integration of all branches of Howarth into a central computer system, the development of merchant branches, introduction of a sector leading website and a new corporate identity as well as staff training.
Many will recall his organisation of company annual conferences for sales and branch managers, where his professionalism and forward-thinking helped to maintain the Howarth’s position at the forefront of the industry, despite ever increasing competition.
He was a true gentleman who was always interested in the well-being of his colleagues and many friends at Howarth Timber, providing them with positive support.
Managing director Nicholas Howarth said: “I know that I can speak for everyone in the company, and indeed for those in the industry who knew David, in saying that we are deeply saddened by his death, which is a great loss to us all. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Mary and his children Adam, Beckie, Verity and Laura.”
