Harry Havard, latterley of AF&D Mackay Ltd, died on July 27.
After leaving school at Merchant Taylors in Crosby, Mr Havard joined the Sherwood Rangers as a gunner in Sherman Tanks in the last two years of the second world war. He saw plently of action and had many fascinating tales.
On returning to the UK he joined his grandfather’s timber business, Goddards, in Liverpool were he cut his teeth in the trade. He progressed his career joining Duncan Ewing in Hull, followed by Edward Chaloner, were he worked mainly with Valley Timber, a large western Canadian shipper.
In March 1961 he joined AF&D Mackay Ltd where he supplied mainly northern and Midlands importers with Canadian and Scandinavian softwood, enjoying perhaps the most halcyon days of the timber trade. He retired in 1992.
Mr Havard’s retirement enabled him to spend quality time with his family and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, swimming and walking, and bought a mobile home near Kirkby Lonsdale which he visited regularly with his wife June. He also loved holidays abroad and more recently had enjoyed going on cruises.
