Neville Stern, a former chairman and managing director of William Brandts Timber Group, died on August 28.

Mr Stern joined the timber industry after serving in the Royal Navy from 1941-1946. During his career he worked for Foy Morgan, Gordon Watts and HJ Puddy before joining Brandts Timber in 1962. He was appointed managing director in 1973 and progressed to chairman and managing director seven years later.

He retired in 1987 and, in the same year, was awarded the Golden Insignia of the Order of Merit of the Polish People’s Republic for his part in establishing Polish Timber Products, a joint venture between Brandts and Paged of Warsaw.
