The ODA has promised that London 2012 will be the “greenest games in modern times” – with all timber used on the Olympic site from “known, legal sources, with clear supply chain evidence”.

“Sustainability and caring for our planet and its resources is a global issue and we intend to set the very highest standards in sustainability and legacy for other Games to follow,” said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee.

Martin Gale, chairman of industry Olympic campaign Wood for Gold, described the ODA strategy as a “critical” commitment which would help create a level playing field, with all construction materials measured against the same ODA sustainability criteria.

“It gives timber and wood a fantastic opportunity to compete on this level playing field because wood scores very highly on the majority of the criteria that the ODA has defined.

“It’s a massive opportunity to use the Olympics as a catalyst for the greater use of wood in all other projects in the UK thereafter,” he said.
