Sawmiller Archie McConnel of Dumfries will find out next week whether his extraordinary office is a winner in the Times and Gestetner Digital Office Awards.

The McConnel Wood Products office (TTJ October 7) features a bent elm frame and is covered in oak and softwood feather-shaped shingle cladding. Much of the wood used in its construction came from off-cuts from the company’s yard.

On Monday Mr McConnel is due to attend a reception at London’s Royal College of Art, along with representatives of the 100 companies – including British Airways and Powergen – whose offices were selected by a panel of judges.

The unusual design already appears in a Times and Gestetner publication recognising originality in office building design.
