The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) has announced the start of public consultation on the Australian Forestry Standard.
Mark Edwards, executive officer of Australia Forestry Standard Ltd, said: “If the Australian scheme is endorsed by PEFC, it will provide a mark which will be recognised in Australia’s niche markets in Europe as well as open up the expanding Asian market which is seriously examining forest certification in relation to product purchases from Australia.”
The country has 165 million ha of forests, of which 1.7 million are plantations. Most of the native forest is eucalyptus.
