Pan European Forest Certification (PEFC) UK Ltd has reported considerable progress in the past eight months, saying it can now make a major contribution to ensuring wood materials are sourced legally from sustainably managed woodlands.
Improvement cited by chairman Len Yull at the company’s second AGM on April 28 included BM TRADA‘s recent accreditation to certify to the UK PEFC national governing body’s chain of custody, as endorsed by the PEFC Council in Europe. This was followed by Timbmet becoming the first UK company to receive PEFC chain of custody certification.
However, Mr Yull reported that “considerable confusion” remains in the industry about the importance of certification, particularly compliance with ISO guidelines. He also said PEFC UK Ltd’s activities had so far been constrained by limited finances.
He said: “I anticipate that now we have secured access to the market, and averted the threat that a monopoly can present, those who use the PEFC process will ensure its continued availability.”
