The Papua New Guinea Forest Authority (PNGFA) is trying to revive the flagging number of forestry projects in the country.
Logging projects in operation have plummeted from more than 100 in 1993/94 to just 26 at present.
The reduction has had a big impact on the government’s budget and caused a drop in employment by the sector.
PNFGA is hoping to establish a reforestation policy complemented by a national reforestation programme to ensure a sustainable timber industry.
Regional workshops have been held to give stakeholders an opportunity to air their views on these policies which, when finalised, are likely to set the direction for reforestation activities in the country.
