Politicians are beginning to understand the dire state of UK construction, according to Builders Merchants Federation managing director Chris Pateman.
Mr Pateman was speaking following the release of the House of Commons’ Select Committee report into the issues affecting housing during the credit crunch.
The report said further steps are needed to ensure housebuilders can sell their houses and meet government housing targets. It also says the government’s Asset-Backed Guarantee Scheme for residential mortgages was doomed to fail.
Mr Pateman welcomed the report’s findings.
“This report recognises several points that the Get Britain Building campaign has been making in the seven months since we started the campaign.”
He said merchants believe the government is not doing enough to help ensure the survival of companies in the construction industry, as well as save jobs and retain skills.
