London 2012 Olympic bosses, the timber industry and certification organisations are looking at the introduction of project timber certification for individual Games venues.

Dr Peter Bonfield, leader of construction products at the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), said bids from certification services providers to manage project certification on the Olympics site were currently being evaluated.

The ODA already had a commitment to use only legal and sustainably sourced timber for the whole Olympics construction site.

“We don’t need to do this [project certification] but the trade, government and certification organisations are keen to trial project with the ODA,” he said.

“Project certification is a practical evolution.”

Project certification was one of a number of subjects discussed at the May 6 meeting of the Olympic Timber Supply Panel, consisting of approved suppliers of wood products to the Olympic construction project.

Dr Bonfield said a talking point was how chain of custody certification could be ensured when approved certified products were then sent to a third-party off-site fabrication company for the manufacture of products

He also said the ODA was very pleased with the Timber Supply Panel’s performance and the attitude of Tier One Olympics contractors and sub-contractors to ensure the supply of legal and sustainable wood products to the Olympics site.

Dr Bonfield said supplies of timber had been smooth, with a delivery management system ensuring that only wood supplied by Timber Supply Panel members was able to get onto site.
