A Finnish log home producer says it has accelerated its manufacturing process by implementing radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

Honkarakenne, which uses UPM’s RFID tags, said that as RFID tags did not require a direct line to sight, it was no longer necessary to identify logs manually.

Tags are used to identify the correct log in the construction stage, with several detached houses able to be constructed simultaneously.

They are attached to each log after being cut to size. Tags then inform the production line about the correct processing operations for the log.

Logs are checked to make sure they have been through all operations before being identified before packing to ensure accurate deliveries to builders.

“Confirming the authenticity and origin of products and introducing automation to various functions are typical of the industry challenges solved by RFID,” said Jari Ovaskainen.
