A proposal to reinstate rail services between Edinburgh and the Borders could provide an alternative access point to and from Scotland for freight, including timber.
Freight operator English Welsh and Scottish Railway says the Waverley Railway Project route could be an alternative to the west coast main line and should be extended to Carlisle to provide increased rail network capacity for markets such as timber and supermarket goods.
The £77m Waverley project, promoted by the Borders, Midlothian and Edinburgh councils and the Scottish Enterprise Borders company, has attracted widespread support during public consultation. Issues raised will be looked at by engineers before a parliamentary order is submitted for consideration early next year.
