A record 10,000 tonnes of pulpwood has been moved from Scottish ports to Workington, Cumbria, in a successful trial by Iggesund Forestry.

Iggesund Forestry manager Steve Bradley said: ‘This was achieved through meticulous planning and, in addition to pulpwood from our own harvesting operations, wood was sourced from Forest Enterprise, Egger Forestry, Euroforest and BSW Harvesting.’

The trial was part of an ongoing strategy to develop the infrastructure to supply the additional raw material requirements to the Workington mill following a £51m development.

Forestry general manager Gordon Little said: ‘It is important that we not only develop the resources, but maintain them in times of oversupply. Export markets in Norway, Sweden and Finland have been developed to ensure that pulpwood can still be harvested and marketed when UK markets are full. The infrastructure is then ready to react to UK needs when required.’
