The Malaysian Timber Certification Council‘s certification scheme needs to be revised to be compatible with the principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council to be more widely accepted in the international market, stakeholders said.

Malaysia’s deputy minister of primary industries, Datuk Anifah Aman, is hopeful the MTCC scheme, which uses the Malaysian Criteria, Indicators, Activities and Standards of Performance for Forest Certification Management (MC&I), will gain more international acceptance and not be a hindrance to the country’s timber exports.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Timber Council said it expects Malaysia’s furniture sector to bounce back by the end of the year on the back of improved global economic conditions.
