Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has approved the paving of a 1,570km section of dirt track from Cuiaba to the Amazon river port of Santarem to cut journey times for grain trucks.
But environmental groups fear paving the track will lead to more destruction of the rainforest by loggers, ranchers and soy farmers.
