Matti Vanhanen has claimed that the export duties, which will see prices per m3 increase from €4 to €50 in 2009, will have an adverse effect on Finland’s economy and are in breach of Russia’s commitment to co-operation between the two countries and its WTO entry obligations.
Mr Vanhanen has called for further talks between Russia and the European Union to try to clarify the situation and limit the impact the export duty increase will have on the Finnish economy.
