Russia’s decision to ban the export of round timber to Estonia has delivered a body blow to the Estonian sawmill industry which imports around one sixth of its raw material from there.

Andres Talijarv, managing director of the Estonian Forestry Union has written to the foreign ministry describing how Russia’s ban will impact not only on the Estonian timber industry but also on the investments it has made in Russia.

He said: ‘Joint ventures with Russia are based on a large proportion of the felled timber shipped to Estonia.’

The ban will become effective on January 28.
