Södra says the construction of an all-wood tennis centre is about to start at its head office.

Dynacon has been appointed as the contractor, with the groundwork due to start at Vaxjo soon. Completion should be by next summer.

Peter Nilsson, CEO of Södra Timber, said the centre hall would be built using passive building technology.

“We have evaluated various parameters such as technology, methodology, quality, safety and the environment,” added Arvid Eriksson, strategic purchaser at Södra Skogsägarna.

“Compared with the regulations of the Swedish Board of Housing, Building and Planning, passive building technology in this instance will result in annual energy savings of around 300,000kWh. Additionally, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced due to the fact that timber will be used for construction.”

The project is the result of an architectural competition run by Södra to design the tennis venue. Some 193 plans from 23 countries were received.

The winning entry was Tennis + trä by Danish architects Kent Pedersen Arkitektfirma.

Södra has been discussing the use and running of the centre with former tennis world champion Stefan Edberg, ex-Davis Cup captain Carl-Axel Hageskog and Magnus Larsson, assistant Davis Cup captain.
