Tasmanian logging contractors have been urged to learn from New Zealand to help cut the number of accidents involving log trucks.
Members of the Tasmanian Forest Contractors Association, meeting at the organisation’s annual conference, heard how New Zealand had reduced log truck crashes from 44 in 1999 to just 10 in 2004.
Council chairman Warwick Wilshier told members they needed to acknowledge the problem in order to solve it.
The conference also saw guest speakers discuss future markets for the Tasmanian timber industry, while contractors were encouraged to focus on plantation timber to ensure their long-term survival.
