Moves are being made to improve safety in the Sarawak logging industry.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Sarawak Timber Association (STA) and the National Insitute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) to formulate industry safety guidelines.

Niosh chariman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye described logging as one of the most hazardous occupations in the country. A total of 1,524 accidents and 25 deaths were reported last year.

About 900 loggers have already been trained through a training and accreditation scheme set up by the STA.
