SCA is now increasing its resources for nature conservation planning following its admission last month of felling mistakes in FSC-certified forests.
The company says it will recruit five nature conservation specialists and embark on a thorough inventory of biodiversity in SCA’s forests.
Each of SCA’s five forest districts will have a nature conservation specialist, while a further recruit will aid SCA Skog’s central staff.
“We know that we have high nature qualities in the forests we have set aside from forestry,” said SCA Skog president Mats Sandgren. “With more detailed knowledge of these forests, we can more efficiently prioritise nature consideration in our managed forests.”
The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation flagged up “violations” of the FSC forest management standard in four areas of SCA’s forests during October. After examining felling operations in the four tracts, SCA confirmed that “mistakes have occurred and that is not acceptable”.
SCA owns 2.6 million ha of forest land in northern Sweden, of which 2 million ha is used for active forestry.
