There is a market for hardwood flooring produced in Scotland ‘provided that the product can compete in the volume market by matching the quality and price of imports’, according to a new study from Highland Birchwoods.
Individual sawmills have already attempted small-scale forays into the hardwood flooring market.
But a report, The Production and Marketing of Scottish Hardwood Flooring, says ‘lack of capital has been a key constraint to the manufacture of flooring product in Scotland’.
The researchers suggest several routes forward including formation of a new com-pany by existing sawmillers to raise all the capital to start a new flooring factory from scratch.
