The Scottish Executive has commissioned Highland Birchwoods of Ross-shire to conduct a study to identify ‘innovative future use’ of timber cladding on Scottish buildings.

The project will look at past and present use of softwood and hardwood cladding, make comparisons with other countries, and flag up the potential for more widespread use of the product.

The study, due to be completed in the summer, will have the status of a Scottish Executive policy discussion paper.

Ivor Davies, timber technology project manager at Highland Birchwoods, said: ‘There is a belief that timber cladding has no historical precedent in Scotland, but there has been a lot more than people think. If anyone has any strong views on the subject, I’d be delighted to hear from them.’
