Forestry Commission Scotland’s award-winning office in Smithton has won further approval after a visit from the Prince of Wales.

Prince Charles recently toured the facility, meeting the architects and discussing the energy efficiency measures that were used in its construction.

The office uses timber and other locally-sourced natural materials throughout its construction, including Douglas fir, OSB and I-beams, as well as employing a wood-fuelled heating system.

“”The fact that we had used local resources and skills and had opted for natural products and treatments where ever possible also made a good impression,” said David Jardine, Inverness Forest district manager

“We explained to His Royal Highness how the new office really embodies our commitment to sustainability and to promoting Scotland’s timber industries.”

The Smithton office has already won several awards recognising its sustainability, including the Inverness Civic Trust Award, Scottish Architects Award and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland’s sustainability prize.
