The Scottish Parliament building, which features an abundance of structural timber and joinery, has been awarded the Stirling Prize for best new building of the year.
The £431m building, designed by Enric Miralles, impressed the judges, who described it as a “remarkable architectural statement”.
Timber engineering specialist Gordon Cowley worked on the roof of the debating chamber, which features oak glulam sections 30m wide and 60m in length. European oak and sycamore features heavily throughout the building.
The Stirling Prize is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
