A serious fire at a timber frame site in Camberwell, London, this morning was the second blaze on a Greenacre Homes project in the last two months.
According to the London Fire Brigade, the fire broke out in the early hours and the emergency services were called at 2.28 am.
The blaze in the five storey housing association block was tackled by 75 fire fighters who had the flames under control by around 6 am.
The part-built development was seriously damaged and there were fears the blaze would spread to neighbouring housing and a bus depot. About 150 people were evacuated from nearby buildings.
The block was being built for Wandle Housing Association and its press spokesman Peter Green confirmed its was a Greenacre development.
“We’ve been liaising with them thoughout the day about the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage,” he said. “Our clerk of works also attended the site this morning and we are awaiting his report. We can’t make any further comment at this time.”
On November 26 another serious blaze destroyed a part-built Greenacre 39-apartment building (www.ttonline.com 26 November).
The London Fire Brigade today said it was concerned about fires in timber framed buildings under construction “because of the safety risks t hey present for firefighters, those working on construction sites and residents living nearby.”
