Action will be taken against 600 illegal timber factories operating in the Malaysian state of Selangor, according to Bernama.

Authorities have so far moved against about 17 illegal factories, with 15 of them fined a total of RM200,000.

Operators of the factories are avoiding the cost of properly establishing them on industrial land and being licensed, choosing instead to set up on agricultural land or in the forest.

Authorities are working with other agencies to trace mills without licences.
