The North America-based Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has applied for re-endorsement to PEFC.

PEFC International has invited all stakeholders to comment on the compliance of SFI’s 2010-2014 standard with PEFC’s sustainability benchmarks by October 6.

The SFI forest certification standard was orginally endorsed by PEFC in December 2005 and expires on December 6, 2010.

PEFC International secretary-general Ben Gunneberg said since more than half the total global certified area was located in North America, it was important that certification criteria applied there met internationally-recognised sustainability requirements.

The SFI programme network involves private landowners, independent loggers, forestry professionals, local government agencies, academics, scientists and conservationists.
