The window, which was manufactured by Hull-based Wright Joinery, is the result of two years of joint research and development between coatings and finishes specialist Akzo Nobel Sikkens, BSW Timber and Accsys Technologies subsidiary Titan Wood (TTJ March 18/25).
Accoya, which is hailed by Accsys as “effectively a new species” is produced by a non-toxic acetylation process which makes softwoods and non-durable hardwoods much more durable.
The collaboration with Sikkens has resulted in a new package of coatings guarantees: first coat maintenance for a translucent (wood stain) finish is pushed to 10 years and for an opaque finish to 12 years. And if Accoya is combined with the Sikkens Sentinel Plus wood maintenance protection programme, the guarantee is extended to 30 years.
“Titan Wood wanted to work with Sikkens because it’s a world-wide brand,” said Sikkens’s business development manager Geoff Taylor.
He added that Sikkens had played a key role in market research for Accoya. “We visited our customer base with BSW and explained the benefits of Accoya,” said Mr Taylor. “We were also able to advise BSW of joinery manufacturers’ needs. For example, Wright Joinery’s requirement was for laminated timber, so BSW adapted the process.”
