A seminar aimed at informing the timber industry of the latest research into wood and timber will be held in Scotland in September.
It is the first seminar to be held under the auspices of the Strategic Integrated Timber Research (SIRT) programme – a joint initiative involving Napier University, Glasgow University and Forest Research – and there are plans to make it an annnual event.
The organisers say that the forestry and wood processing sector is a key industry in Britain, with volumes of timber from British forests predicted to rise.
However, they warn, for this timber to compete in an international market, it must be suitable for the envisaged end use and it is essential to understand the needs of the final end user, the best methods for processing and how forest management affects the timber and wood produced.
The SIRT programme aims to provide a strategic direction for research on Britain’s timber and the seminar will include presentations from research organisations summarising ongoing work and seek and industry perspective on research needs.
