A ponderosa pine has become the six billionth tree to be planted in British Columbia since reforestation programmes begain in the province in the 1930s.

British Columbia’s premier Gordon Campbell joined community and industry leaders to plant the tree.

He said the event demonstrated British Columbia’s commitment to sustainable forest management.

“British Columbia has almost as much natural, diverse forest as it had 150 years ago, while at the same time our forest sector is delivering long-term economic benefits to British Columbians,” said Mr Campbell.

Meanwhile, a cabinet re-shuffle has seen Pat Bell become the province’s new minister of forests and range.
