Smee Timber Group is investing £500,000 in structural hardwood stock to expand the business of its subsidiary GR Wiltshire & Co.

The expansion involves GR Wiltshire relocating from its base at Lutterworth-based Whitmore’s Timber Co Ltd, another Smee company, to the group’s main Winsford site.

Smee sees big opportunities for Wiltshire to grow its market share in sea defence contracts, marine developments, piling work, bridge-building, walkways and decking.

A team of Smee sales staff, headed by manager Ian Thomson, will be responsible for Wiltshire’s sales. Further sales staff are to be recruited.

John McCoy, director at Smee, said: “We feel we can push Wiltshires a bit more at Winsford because we have better handling equipment, more space and more people.”

One ongoing contract is supplying a large quantitity of masaranduba for use as cladding on a Manchester property development.
