An “empowerment charter” is being drafted for South Africa’s forestry industry to help it contribute towards the rural economy.
Water affairs and forestry minister Buyelwa Sonjica said it was important to focus on strengthening the forestry industry because of its importance in creating employment, especially in rural areas.
The industry contributes 2% towards the country’s gross domestic product.
The empowerment charter process will be driven by the trade and industry department and it will be inclusive of all industry stakeholders. It is hoped to have a formal structured process in place before the end of the year.
