Stewart Milne Timber Systems has reported major success in the affordable housing sector, with developers switching on to the benefits of “modern methods of construction”.

The company has won a £1.2m contract to produce 95 units in a £9.5m regeneration project by John Laing Partnership and Family Housing Association in Hammersmith which includes a six-storey timber frame structure.

Its Witney factory also recently hosted a visit from English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency which helps the government support high quality sustainable growth in England.

The visitors also saw a private development in Bedminster, where Stewart Milne is erecting what it believes to be the country’s first seven-storey timber structure.

Sales and marketing director Christine Jones said the benefits of using timber building systems, including speed of construction and health and safety, were being realised by housing providers.

She said the architect on the Hammersmith development, due to start in January, had already recommended Stewart Milne for other projects.

“We have good opportunities in the London area with other housing associations and developers,” she added.

The Hammersmith development, which replaces council homes, features a “stepped” design on the six-storey block.
