Stora Enso has started negotiations with workers at four of its sawmills regarding possible temporary lay-offs as it admits to being increasingly concerned by the trend in Finnish raw material prices.

The company said co-determination discussions will take place at Kitee, Uimaharju, Varkhaus and Honkalahti, affecting a total of about 500 employees.

“We need to prepare ourselves to take rapid corrective actions if raw material prices continue to escalate and can no longer be compensated by increases in end-product prices of efficiency improvements,” said Hannu Kasurinen, executive vice-president of Stora Enso Wood Products.

The negotiations address the plan to curtail production at individual sawmills if necessary through temporary lay-offs between September 1 and December 31.
