Procurement, CE marking, membership services, training and risk assessments were key themes of the Scottish Timber Trade Association’s (STTA) Members’ Conference.

Timber Trade Federation (TTF) chief executive John White gave a low-down on the latest development in membership services, while the TTF’s Rachel Butler and Nick Boulton gave presentations on certification and procurement and CE marking and structural plywood respectively.

BRE Scotland also discussed timber procurement with reference to the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, as well as unveiling plans for their new Innovation Park to be built at the former Ravenscraig steelworks in north Lanarkshire.

Tim Small, from the Health & Safety Executive, was also on hand to talk members through the risk assessments for the timber sector and dispel any myths members may have had.

STTA also took the opportunity to contribute towards the TTF’s training initiatives by presenting Keith Fryer, chair of the TTF Education, Training and Careers Committee, with a cheque for £1,000 to support their work.

“There is a growing recognition that education, training and skills development has to be given a higher priority for the good of our industry,” said STTA president Andrew Newton.
