Inspirational design, sustainable development and affordable housing are to be the focus of a timber conference at the University of Exeter on September 18.

Building With Wood, organised by Woodfair South West and the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, will feature seminars and discussion groups led by architects and designers, including Building for Life chairman Wayne Hemningway and Pekka Heikinnen, the director of the Helsinki University of Technology.

“There is a great deal of creative and technical innovation in the use of timber in buildings,” Woodfair South West said.

“This conference will both inspire and inform delegates – clearly showing how timber can be used to deliver modern buildings that are strikingly beautiful in appearance and highly efficient in performance.”

Building With Wood will also include exhibitors showcasing timber products and innovations, including flooring, doors and windows, with timber frame manufacturer Carpenter Oak Ltd confirmed for the event.

Woodfair South West is to follow up Building With Wood with the Cranborne Chase Woodfair at Larmer Tree Gardens in Wiltshire over the weekend of October 20-21.

Cranborne Chase Woodfair will feature hands-on workshops and live demonstrations of sawmilling, horse-logging and other forest-based activities.
