About 33,000 timber components have been used to create a new 10,000m² aircraft production hall and visitor centre in Switzerland.
Arched glulam beams spanning 61m were employed in the roof structure of Pilatus Aircraft’s new factory in Stans, which externally resembles an aircraft wing.
A digital building model was created as the basis for the entire construction planning, including the 60,000 screws and dowels to be used.
Spruce glulam beams of strength classes GL24, GL28 and GL36 were specified, with timber construction carried out by Paul Stephan GmbH + Co KG, Hector Egger Holzbau AG and Holzbautechnik Burch AG.
Wooden boards were fastened to the primary supporting structure to form the outside walls. Structural board (19mm) faces the interior, with 15mm MDF on the exterior, clad with sheet metal.
The project, designed by Scheitlin-Syfrig + Partner AG, cost £16.8m and took 13 months to complete.
