“Sri Lanka’s forest cover is reducing at an alarming rate,” said managing director Ramesh Schaffter.

“Currently at 22% of its original cover, it is estimated that in another 20 years or so this will shrink to a mere 5%. Clearly it is time to take serious action,” he added.

Espalier will work with a reputed forestry consultant to provide “annual good health certificates” to potential investors.

Mr Schaffer said the company believed teak was the best hardwood timber to grow in Sri Lanka from both the environment and the customers’ point of view.

“By growing tomorrow’s timber today and by offering uniquely designed investment opportunities in teak plantations, our investors will not only cultivate financial security, but will also play a part in restoring and preserving Sri Lanka’s lush and beautiful forests,” said Mr Schaffer.
