Welland Valley Timber in Lincolnshire, which was formed from a management buyout of Soar Timber in 2009, and the Roof Centre in Kidderminister, an independent building materials supplier, are expected soon to be joined by two more, TBG said.

Woodbridge Timber in Suffolk and Simpson Strong-Tie have joined the original 16 suppliers, which include BSW Timber, James Jones, Snows Timber and Samac Fixings.

“We have distilled the enquiries for membership down to about 40 and 14 are going through due dilligence; that’s them looking at us as well as us looking at them,” said principal Allan Durning, former executive chairman of the National Buying Group. “We have signed up two and I am confident of two more very soon.”

Mr Durning said TBG was on target to have 30-40 members and seven-figure purchases for suppliers within the first year.

“We are here to provide a supply chain for people who want to grow their business. Suppliers put up material at a clear price and members support them.”

He said he had also been contacted by people looking for spot prices.

“We are not brokers, we are not trading in the grey areas that exist; this is about chain of custody and stability of supply for SMEs, this is what we took to the Timber Trade Federation.”
