Timber frame was chosen for the first sub-market rental scheme in the country for teachers.
The joint project between Kent County Council (KCC) and Moat Housing Group has seen eight one bedroom flats and two two bedroom flats built on KCC-owned surplus land at Tunbridge Wells High School.
The flats, which used a high degree of prefabrication and off-site manufacture, have high energy efficiency.
The scheme was designed by Cattell Skinner Design Partnership. Partner Steve Skinner said: “Timber frame was chosen for its speed of construction, and its ability to fulfil Egan report principles and meet energy issues.”
The design is replicable and Moat and KCC are in discussion with a number of head teachers and school governors regarding similar projects in other parts of Kent. Construction of a similar scheme in Ashford is already planned to start early next year.
