Timber frame has taken centre stage at a new production centre for Mull Theatre.
The building posed problems in the specification stage, including its isolated location on the Isle of Mull, harsh weather, restricted transport to the island and a shortage of readily available skilled labour. Timber was selected for its build, transport and cost benefits over steel and concrete, and its ability to blend into the rural and unspoilt backdrop of the Isle of Mull.
“When costs and transport issues were taken into account it became apparent that a timber frame was going to be a much better option,” said Mull Theatre associate director Tony Cox.
The building houses a rehearsal stage, set-building workshop, costume room and administration facilities for the theatre company, once recognised by the Guinness Book of Record as the world’s smallest professional theatre. It also allows seating for an audience of 100.
“From the unique design of the building to the unusual transport and isolated location factors, this project is a real showcase for the flexibility that timber frame construction offers,” said Peter Hall, marketing manager at timber frame kit supplier Scotframe.
