The three winning teams in the 13th national Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Student Challenge final all opted to use renewable timber frame construction with timber cladding for their projects this year.
Nine teams made it to the final where they were tasked with producing a persuasive argument on the benefits of developing a hypothetical sustainable community.
The overall winner was Dublin Institute of Technology, followed by Sunderland and Highbury Colleges respectively.
Student Challenge aims to encourage students and young professionals into the industry and give construction experts the opportunity to glean ideas and solutions from the next generation.
Commenting on the standard of entries, panel judge Dave Hampton of ABS Consulting said: “I would like to find ways to communicate the nine schemes to the government for its sustainable communities initiatives. They were inspired and had very sound infrastructure and master plans that could be built on commercially.”
