A Somerset timber company has had to pay out nearly £17,000 after serious pollution offences were discovered.??
Snows Timber of Glastonbury admitted breaching the Water Resources Act 1991 during a hearing before Frome magistrates.
The court heard that in February 2010 waste water containing the wood preservative chemicals permethrin, tebuconazole and propaconazo was found to be draining into nearby Glastonbury Canal via an underground pipe and small watercourse.??
Hundreds of fish died as a result of the pollution. The canal is near ?the Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve.
??Snows Timber, trading as Bradford Timber Supplies, was fined £7,000 with £9,600 costs.??
“This was a serious pollution incident that had a major effect on water quality in the Glastonbury Canal and caused the death of hundreds of fish,” said an Environment Agency spokesperson.
“Businesses using potentially lethal chemicals such as pesticides must ensure they are stored and handled safely and do not escape into environment.”?
