Close work with the government is ensuring that, for the first time, the timber trade is being heard strongly at 10 Downing Street.
Speaking at the London Hardwood Club, Paul Martin, director-general of the Timber Trade Federation, said: ‘We are building a strong environmental case for our product and working very closely with key ministers to ensure we have a clear message to take to the World Sustainability Summit in Johannesburg in the autumn.
Introducing Dr Penny Bienz, who has taken over Graham Bruford’s post at Forests Forever, Mr Martin said: ‘This is an exciting time to come into the federation and the timber trade. The federation will, in the next few months, launch its Code of Conduct which will give the trade a direct commercial advantage to being a member.’
At the lunch £700 was raised for St Joseph’s Hospice in East London. A further donation of £500 will be made to the Timber Trade Benevolent Society.
