An internal think-tank at Timbmet Ltd has developed the first computerised measuring and bar coding system of its kind in the world.
The system, called MeasureDeal, has been installed at the company’s Cumnor Hill headquarters at a cost of £5m.
Timbmet chief executive Simon Fineman says it will help streamline customers’ own operations and transform the way stock is allocated for individual orders. It will also eliminate wastage, saving both Timbmet and its customers money.
Timber coming into the Cumnor Hill yard is split and run through the machine which fully dimensionally measures each piece.
A bar code is then allocated to each item before the stock is rebundled. Each bundle has its own bar code, enabling information on exact dimensions to be given.
Timbmet says the system will enable it to turn orders round more quickly .
And it ensures customers are only charged for the exact quantity of timber they order .
