TRADA International is working with the Eden Project in a post-tsunami regeneration scheme which involves the building of new timber homes in Sri Lanka.

TRADA plans to use its experience in wood pole construction for Project Sri-Build, which also involves NGOs Rainforest Rescue International and Habitat for Humanity.

Lionel Jayanetti of TRADA International says local people in tsunami-hit regions of Sri Lanka will be trained in eucalyptus pole construction, as well as furniture making using rubberwood.

Mr Jayanetti said: “Community involvement is paramount for Project Sri-Build, from deciding on the buildings needed, the materials to use, to acquiring the training and skills necessary for local people to carry out the processing, manufacturing and building work themselves.”

The construction techniques will hopefully be used for a pilot project in Gintota, southern Sri Lanka, aimed at creating secure and durable housing for up to 40 families. TRADA will provide the skills, while its members are being asked to to help fund the £150,000 cost of the pilot.

If successful, the pilot could become a model to be copied elsewhere.
