Following concerns raised by UK-based timber companies about the validity of FSC certified plywood coming out of the country, FSC UK construction adviser Beck Woodrow said that the organisation was working “to the best of its ability” to assure the quality of products carrying FSC certification and that it takes any allegations of malpractice “very seriously”.
Companies offering FSC certification should be using timber that has a complete chain of custody according to Ms Woodrow so that through to the manufacturing stage there should be no reason to question the history of the wood.
Andy Roby, head of environment and corporate social responsibility at The Timber Trade Federation, stated the group was aware of unease in the industry and said that it was in dialogue with FSC to recognise brand concerns and see them sorted out.
Ms Woodrow added that any individuals or companies with concerns about FSC-certified timber products should contact the organisation with specific details in order to allow it to carry out further investigation.
