Travis Perkins pipped Jewson to record the biggest sales turnover among UK timber businesses for 1999/2000.

The Business Ratio Report published by the Prospect Shop has Travis Perkins at the top of the chart with £874.3m, closely followed by Jewson’s £831.9m.

Castle Timber & Building Materials topped the trade for pre-tax profit margins with 20.6%, nearly eight times the industry average of just 2.6%.

The report, analysing the figures of 154 timber traders, said industry performance was ‘stable’ with average compound sales growth of 5% and pre-tax profits growth of 10% over the past three years.
